Fall Jacket

Note: Use 1/4" seam allowance throughout.

Step 1. From pastel plaid flannel cut two rectangles 18" x 22". These are the body front and back pieces. Place pieces together on work surface, right sides facing. Pin together, leaving a 9" space at each side at the top for sleeve holes. Stitch pieces together at sides and shoulders, leaving a 7 1/4" opening at center top as shown in Fig. 1.

Step 2. Mark and cut a slit up center front. Use V-neck pattern to cut V-shaped neckline at center front. Press and turn inside out.

Step 3. Prepare sleeve pattern and cut two sleeves from pastel plaid flannel. Fold each sleeve, right sides together, and sew seams. Turn right sides out and pin sleeves to openings with right sides facing. Sleeve caps will be slightly gathered. Sew each sleeve in place; press.

Step 4. Cut two sleeve patches from scraps of coordinating fake leather, suede or fleece 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" and 2 1/2" x 2 1/2". Cut two patches 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and one patch 3" x 3" for jacket right front.

Step 5. Trace large and small acorns on paper side of fusible transfer web. Cut out acorns, leaving roughly 1/4" margin around traced lines. Following manufacturer’s directions, fuse to light tan fake leather. Cut out on traced lines.

Step 6. Position sleeve and jacket right front patches as shown in photo. Secure with buttonhole stitch or other decorative embroidery stitch using 3 strands of contrasting 6-strand embroidery floss. Tie two small bows with 6-strand embroidery floss or fake leather yarn. Attach one bow to a sleeve patch and one to a front patch.

Step 7. Position small acorn over right front patches as shown in photo. Fuse lower part of acorn with cap overlapping. Stitch around edges with a running stitch and 3 strands of contrasting 6-strand embroidery floss.

Step 8. Position and fuse cap of large acorn as shown in photo. Glue base of acorn by running a line of permanent fabric adhesive around curved edges only. Leave unattached along top for pocket entry.

Step 9. Bind top of pocket with buttonhole stitch and 3 strands of contrasting 6-strand embroidery floss. Work running stitch around remaining outside edges of acorn. Trim large acorn with a small bow as in Step 6. Sew two 1/2" buttons to edge of pocket as shown in photo and one 1/2" button to a right front patch.

Winter Side

Step 1. From pastel plaid flannel cut one yoke piece 5 1/4" x 18". Sew 18" edge to 18" x 17 1/4" coordinating solid-color fleece for jacket back. These pieces joined make the 18" x 22" jacket back.

Step 2. From second coordinating solid-color fleece cut one rectangle 17" x 18". Place on work surface and draw a snowdrift line on lower 18" edge as shown in Fig. 2. Cut on drawn line.

Step 3. From white fleece cut one rectangle 8" x 18". Use cut-off fabric from Step 2 as pattern to mark top of snowdrift on white fleece rectangle. Cut on line. Place on bottom edge of rectangle shape in Step 2 and sew in place with buttonhole stitch and 3 strands of contrasting 6-strand embroidery floss.

Step 4. If necessary, trim lower edge so that front and back rectangles measure 18" x 22". Repeat Fall Jacket, Steps 1–3.

Step 5. Trace four snowflakes and snowman appliqué pieces on paper side of fusible transfer web. Cut out leaving roughly 1/4" margin around traced lines. Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse to selected fabrics, referring to photo for ideas.

Step 6. Referring to photo, position and fuse to jacket. Work buttonhole stitch around all edges with 3 strands of matching or contrasting 6-strand embroidery floss. Also work buttonhole stitch along lower edge of back yoke.

Step 7. Satin-stitch twig snowman arms with 3 strands of brown embroidery floss. Satin-stitch nose with 3 strands of gold floss. Work French knots in contrasting color for eyes.

Step 8. Sew 1/2" button to center of each flower and three to front of snowman referring to photo for placement.

Assembly

Step 1. Place right sides of both jackets together and seam the front slit, the V and the neck hole. Turn right side out; press.

Step 2. Push sleeves through with flannel as lining. Place on work surface. Flatten and straighten the jacket. Bring the end of the flannel sleeve back up and over the winter jacket sleeve for a cuff at the sleeve opening. Press raw edge under and secure with buttonhole stitch using 3 strands of the same color embroidery floss used to stitch yoke.
